Explain in your own words
Explain why writing a deal down protects both sides, not just one.
Have you ever made a deal with a friend or your parents? Writing that deal down can make sure everyone remembers exactly what they agreed to!
What this means
A contract is like a special promise, but it's written down. When you write down a promise, it helps both people remember what they said they would do. It's like having a map for your agreement.
Imagine you promise to clean your room, and your parents promise you can play extra video games. If you just say it, one person might forget parts of the deal. Writing it down makes it clear for everyone.
It protects both sides because everyone can look at the paper to see what was decided. If there's ever a question, the written contract has the answer. No more arguments about 'I thought you said...' or 'No, I promised something else!'.
So, writing a contract isn't just about one person getting what they want. It helps everyone involved feel safe and fair. Everyone knows what to expect and what they need to do.
Words to know
- Contract
- A written agreement or promise between two or more people.
- Agreement
- When two or more people decide on something together.
Examples
- You write down that James will share his toy robots for 30 minutes, and Harper will share her art supplies for 30 minutes. This protects both of you from someone playing too long or not sharing.
- Your parents write a contract that if you finish your homework every day for a week, you get to choose the movie on Friday night. This protects them by making sure your homework gets done, and protects you by guaranteeing your movie choice.
- A friend writes that they will trade you their shiny rock for your cool sticker. If it's written down, neither of you can change your mind later and say you wanted something different.
What a great answer looks like
Harper and James want to trade chores. Harper will feed the dog for three days, and James will clear the table after dinner for three days. To protect both of them, they write: 'Agreement: Harper feeds dog for 3 days. James clears table for 3 days. Signed: Harper, James.' Now everyone knows exactly what to do and when.
