Memorize word for word
Name the five oceans and point to each on a globe.
Imagine a world without any land! Our Earth has huge bodies of water that cover most of its surface. These enormous watery places are called oceans.
What this means
Oceans are the largest natural bodies of saltwater on Earth. They are so big that they cover about 71% of our planet. That's a lot of water!
Even though they are all connected, we usually talk about five main oceans. It's like how all the rooms in your house are connected, but you still call them different names like 'kitchen' or 'bedroom'.
Knowing the names of the five oceans helps us understand our world better. It's a key part of geography, which is the study of Earth's features.
Each ocean is unique and has its own special characteristics, like different kinds of animals or different temperatures. But for now, let's focus on their names and where they are located.
Words to know
- Ocean
- A very large, deep body of saltwater that covers a big part of the Earth.
- Saltwater
- Water that contains salt, like the water in oceans.
- Globe
- A round model of the Earth that shows continents and oceans.
Examples
- The Pacific Ocean is the biggest ocean, like the biggest kid in your class.
- The Arctic Ocean is around the North Pole, just like a hat on top of someone's head.
- The Atlantic Ocean separates North America from Europe, like a big watery road between them.
What a great answer looks like
When you look at a globe, find the big blue areas. First, find the very biggest one, that's the Pacific. Then, look between North America and Europe for the Atlantic. Below India, you'll see the Indian Ocean. At the very bottom of the world, surrounding Antarctica, is the Southern Ocean. Finally, at the very top, around the North Pole, is the Arctic Ocean.
The exact words to memorize
